There are a number of people who love the artistry of candle making at home, and not only take it up as a hobby, but also as a source of financial gain. However, there are some rules to comply, if you’d like your hobby or business of candle making at home to be a success. The first thing you need to do is gather the required ingredients and tools, and for items you don’t have, the same can be purchased from any craft store. In addition to other ingredients and tools, such as scented oil; wicks; dye; a whisk; moulds; thermometer; and a double boiler, wax is the most important item required.
There are a variety of wax forms to purchase from – paraffin wax, beeswax, soy wax, among many others. The most common form of wax used to make candles is paraffin; however, if you wish to use a more eco-friendly form of wax, you can choose either soy wax, or beeswax. To get started, take your double boiler and heat the wax. Make sure that the temperature doesn’t exceed 180° Fahrenheit when heating the wax.
Nevertheless, it is crucial that the wax when heated must be in a totally liquid state. Once this is done, add the selected dye to the wax after it has been liquefied, and mix them both together with the whisk. When you’re happy with the color of your wax, add the desired amount of scented oil and once again, use the whisk to mix it up so that the scent and color are distributed evenly.
Now, reduce the temperature of the wax to 150° Fahrenheit, use a thermometer to check it. Next, with extreme care pour the hot wax into your candle moulds after the temperature has been reduced. Now, carefully place the wicks in the center of each mould with wax. Let the candles cool down totally after keeping the moulds aside for at least five hours, and then remove them.
After you’ve mastered the art of candle making at home, you’re now ready to use your creativity skills and produce your own hand-crafted candles. If your children wish to help you in making candles, make sure they are safe and, in no way, get burned. Whether you decide to start your own candle making at home business, or make it a hobby, you will surely find it an enjoyable and interesting experience.
