Now that you have your supplies you can put some aprons on the kids and get started with heating the wax or gel you have purchased.
It is important to always keep a close eye on the temperature when making candles as it should never get higher than 180 degrees. After the wax or gel has melted you add in the fragrance and you do not have to use a specific amount. You can get the kids to do this part and you can decide how potent you want the candle to be, but you typically only have to use a few drops of any essential oil. You do not want the smell to be overpowering when you go to light the candle once it is finished.
Everything should be nicely mixed together then you want to glue in one end of a wick into the container. This should dry in just a few seconds and after that you can pour in the heated liquid. Do not let the child help with this part because even just a drop of the hot liquid on their skin will hurt. Keep the wick held out of the way to make sure it does not get wet, because you will not be able to light the candle once it is finished if the wick is covered in wax.
You will need to keep the wick held straight up until the wax has cured or dried completely. There are also some handy little devices you can find at candle making stores that will work just as well. The average candle will take around four hours to dry completely. Kids love doing things with their parents and teachers, and it is great for them to see the profits of their hard work.
